How to survive a 30 hour bus trip in South America

We want to share with you this great blog and post we found while looking around online. Adrianne has a been traveling around south america, and has some very interesting insights about bus traveling in the region. We thought it was excellente information, very complete and all her travels look amazing! Thanks to her for letting us share it!

Wayfaring Adventure

Step 1: Sit as close as you can to the driver and just cry. He will either empathize for you and drive faster to make you feel better, or get annoyed and drive faster just to end the trip sooner.

No, not really. Though the thought did cross my mind.

While this post has been crafted with the journeys to/from Patagonia in mind, I’m sure most of the tips will apply to any long bus trip. We traveled a total of 30 and 1/2 hours from Puerto Montt down to Punta Arenas. This included two border crossings, passing through the Andes mountains, crisscrossing the southern part of the continent, and traveling through several Argentine departments. In all honesty, it was brutal. So was the return trip (Punta Arenas to Puerto Montt), though because there were fewer passengers and no children, the trip went easier through the night. In case you…

Give us your vote! Is it Chilean or Peruvian?

You might have noticed by now that there is huge controversy between Chile and Peru, and who was the creator of certain products like the pisco or the ceviche. As expats we have really no clue and honestly don´t have the credentials to give official opinions. But, we think it might be a fun idea for you guys out there to speak your mind and tell us what you think! 😉

We love Pisco Sour, and dream of a good ceviche, what about you!? Who owns it internationally? let´s see what the international crowd thinks, and maybe we can go on drinking?? =)

Is it Chilean or peruvian? It´s your call! Just Vote below

Weekend trip to Maitencillo Chile: Beachy Little Town

March is a very good time to go to the beach in Chile, because the crowds are back in the city, the weather is still hot, and the prices are low. In February, most of the small hotels or cabins don´t have availability for just one weekend, you have to reserve for a whole week. So, for those working March is a great time to go down to Maitencillo for the weekend.

Maitencillo

Maitencillo

We particularly love Maitencilllo, because it has a little beach town feel. It is not so crowded as Concon or Reñaca, and not so Pompy as Zapallar or Cachagua. The beach is very long, a bit wavy if you have little kids, but enjoyable. Of course, it´s cold like everywhere in the Pacific but just take a very quick splash to cool off.

When we go in March, we like staying at Cabañas Hermansen. These small little cabins are found on a hill, they are sort of hidden with trees, so they can´t be seen from the street. They have a very cozy rustic feeling; they are clean and quiet. Some cabins have their own terrace and barbecue, which is very convenient for cooking and eating after the beach. They have parking places, so you can forget about the car for the whole weekend and walk everywhere.

It has a nice little restaurant called La Canasta; great for lunch and pisco sour. We enjoyed its terrace and drinking our “Aperitivo” with the view to the beach!

Take trip to the South of Chile: Visit Puerto Varas

pto varas

The south of Chile has one of the most attractive sights and beautiful sceneries of the country. Unlike the desert areas of the northern or central parts, the south its most known for its green pastures, and endless fields.

One of our favorite places to visit is Puerto Varas, about 1.000 KM south from Santiago, about two hours on plane to Puerto Montt (40 minutes away by car)  Puerto Varas is a small town by The Lake Llanquihue and has a view view of the Volcano Osorno! Words can´t really describe how cozy and “gemutlich” like the Germans say this city is. German settlements have been an important part of the growth and creation of this area, hence the buildings remind us of the small wooden cabins, with black and white fronts, characteristic of southern Germany and the Alps.

When you decided to go, here are a list of activities and places that you should not miss:

  • Visit the Osorno Volcano
  • Visit Petrohue Falls with its emerald waters.
  • Visit Lago Todo Los Santos for espectacular views
  • Have afternoon Coffee and cake, or like the Chileans call it Kuchen for its German Word. They have really nice Cafes by the lake, where you can get anything from ice cream to strudels.
  • Book a spa day. We recommend a day at the Hotel Patagonico. You can relax in its sauna, Jacuzzi or enjoy a nice massage.
  • Plan an adventure, go fishing, hiking, rafting or biking. There are many tours and activities that you can do while visiting Puerto Varas.
  • It is a pretty quiet town, but at night you can try your luck at the Casino.
  • Just 30 minutes away, you can visit Frutillar a smaller town also by the lake, which is home to the famous Teatro del Lago.

Now for the most important stuff: where to eat! Puerto Varas is very close to Puerto Montt (city by the ocean) so you can find great seafood, and also they are know for their salmon. We recommend the following places:

  • La Jardinera Gastropub. Attended by its owners, it´s a great restaurant, but you must make reservations.
  • Chamaca Inn Puerto Varas. A small Chilean “Picada” nothing fancy, but very tasty. Simple cooking, but fresh ingredients. Try the Centolla!
  • Mercado 605. They have great wines and chesses, perfect for tapas.
  • La Gringa Bakery. It’s a small café with an international menu but with local products. Lots of cakes and cupcakes!
  • La Marca. It’s a Chilean barbecue place, great for the meat lover

What to do in Santiago? 15th – 28th February

what to do in santiago

Once again we share with you an updated list of some of the activities happening around the city. Summer is almost over (Tear…) but,  don´t worry the warm weather will be here for a little while longer (Happy!!)

Like we said before, February is a slow month, so start getting ready for March because the city comes back to live and full of events.

Until next Time!

Family in town (Part 1): Concon

reñaca

There is one thing that is probably sure for most expats: Visitors. It´s wonderful having family over, and spending some time together. (Of course, considering adequate periods of stay, and sufficient space for all the members) In any case, you will have to plan some sightseeing activities and taking them out to get to know the city or its surroundings.

That being said, we will give you a few suggestions of where to take visitors. For this week’s post, we will share our recommendations for visiting Viña, Reñaca and Concon (Day trip)

Just about 1 hour and a half from the city you will find Viña. You can get there by car, and drive through a very well built highway. To make the most of the entire day, get up early and avoid the weekend traffic out of Santiago (in case of traveling on Saturday specially)

On your way there, depending on time, you could stop and take a look at one of the wineries at the Casablanca valley. Make a short stop, or at least make a note that you are driving by one of the most important wine Valleys in the region.

Follow the signs to Viña, once you get there, you can park the car at the Mall, or if you find a spot near the coastline. From there walk to the coastline toward the boardwalk, where you can enjoy the breeze, get something to eat, buy crafts at the local market, or let the kids plays at the playground. Take some pictures, and  enjoy the scenery. As a fun activity, you can ride a horse carriage around Viña for a few thousand pesos.

Keep going straight and drive towards Reñaca. Here you will see the buildings change, from a city feel, to a more beach setting. You can get out of the car, and enjoy sector 5 the most popular beach spot. If not keep driving towards Concon.

Concon is our favorite area; it has great restaurants and is more secluded, so you have amazing views of the bay. To eat we recommend “A´que Jaime” a famous chilean seafood restaurant by the water. Be sure to order the machas, and ask for the fresh fish options of the day. Their Pili-pili shrimp is also tasty with a spicy kick. It’s always full, so make sure to reserve! Lines are usually long to get in.

Around sunset, make sure to visit the terrace at Radisson hotel in ConCon, they have an incredible view. It’s a great spot to order a pisco sour while watching the sunset.

Hope you enjoy your day in Viña! =)

Camping Experience: Puertecillo Chile

puertecillo chile

For those of you who like the outdoor adventures, sitting around a fire and enjoying the sound of the ocean at the same time, we recommend taking a trip to Puertecillo Chile. This secluded camping spot is about a 4 hour drive from Santiago, it’s a Surfers Paradise. Most people travel there with their board, and wet suits, we just went there to relax and have a different type of weekend.

You will be able to set up camp close to the mountain, between big pine trees. For me this was a unique experience, as I was not used to see pine trees around the ocean, more like palm trees. Nevertheless it was beautiful and it smelled delicious.

puertecillo chilepuertecillo chile

The camping ground is very comfortable, the have very simple but clean bathrooms and showers (pay extra for hot water) and there is a small Restaurant-shack which offers simple things for those in need.

The only way to get there is by car, 4 wheel drive truck is a must. After you leave the main road, you have to enter into a dirt road, which has many curves, so drive slow and safely. Also, beware of the sand when getting to the camp grounds, because a lot of cars get stuck. It’s not easy getting there, but that is why it is not so crowded like the other beach camping areas. So, it´s better if you can find trip partners with knowledge on off road driving.

Here an explanation on how to get there: We took option number two through the Hacienda, and avoided the road they call “La Cuchilla” or the Knife, just to stay on the safe side.

http://aquiyahorapuertecillo.blogspot.co.at/2008/11/desde-santiago-puertecillo.html

Have in mind that it gets cold at night even in winter, so bring jackets, sweaters and cozy sleeping bags. Buy food in advance and make a nice barbecue, with marshmellos of course. The fire will be great at night, with a red wine to warm the body up!!

How to write a CV for Chilean Market?

cv

This is a topic that we are frequently asked. Nowadays, international assignments have changed and in a lot of cases, both partners of a couple are workers. So, for the success of the expatriation, it is important that both of them find a job and continue their career development.

To write a CV seems something easy, but a lot of people lose the opportunity to get an interview because they are not accurate in their CVs. Here you will find some tips:

Extension: This is a very important point, please don´t write a bible! Think that recruiters receive hundreds of CV per job search. Ideally one or two pages. It needs to have the most relevant information according to the job search that you are applying for.

Format: We recommend to use a simple format that facilitates the reading. No grammar errors, no colours, simple font.

Contact data: Please put in a handy place your contact data, especially email address and telephone. In the telephone, please put the complete number including the code area. If the recruiter is in another country, they could not know how to dial. Civil status is something optional. The age in European and Americans CVs are not included. In Latin America, to be honest, is something that sometimes is asked in the CV. Up to you. Regarding the RUT, a lot of recruiters recommend not to put the RUT number, but being a foreigners if you have a RUT, I recommend to put the number or what visa you have. If the recruiter is to close and don´t find this information, maybe he/she will discharge you because thinks that it is too complicate to hire you.

Brief summary: We recommend to include  a paragraph with a summary. Maybe you can copy what you have in Linkedin. It is very helpful for recruiters to find at the beginning of the CV the most relevant information. Think about key words of your profile. 3 or 4 lines.

Experience: Start with the most recent experience. Be very accurate. Put company name, job title, dates (start and end date) and a summary of the main responsibilities and achievements. Your story has to be understood with a fast look.

Education: we see that in Chilean market, the education is very important. Check if your career is available in Chile or if there is any equivalency. Maybe between brackets, you can but the chilean correlation. Or clarify the years of study (maybe you study an university career and Chile that name refers to a technician career).

Language: if you speak English, this is a very good point for Chilean Market. Put this information in a visible place. If the job ad is in English, send the English version. It is also important that you have an Spanish version.

Salary: don´t put the salary in the CV. Unless it is requested.

References: Think about 3 persons that can refer you is requested. If you have someone in Chilean market, it is very appreciated.

Books for a summer afternoon in the pool

summer reading

We are enjoying a warm weather in this south location of the globe and nothing more relaxing that reading a good novel while you sunbathe.

In case you are a non-native Spanish speaker, this recommendation will help you to practice your Spanish. If you don´t speak Spanish, maybe you can buy an English version of these books online.

Caballo de Fuego Trilogy- Author;Florencia Bonelli

trilogia

It is a trilogy from an Argentinean author. Great love story with a great context behind. First you need to read Caballo de Fuego Paris, then Caballo de Fuego Congo and finally Caballo de Fuego Gaza.  It is not necessary but it is good if you first read “Lo que dicen tus ojos”, where the story of some characters is explained here. (We are not sure if the paper version can be found in Santiago´s bookstores.)

Dispara yo ya estoy muerto- Author;Julia Navarro

navarro

“Dispara yo ya estoy muerto” from Julia Navarro, author of other successful novels of Spanish narrative such as “La sangre de los inocentes” and “Dime quien soy”, is the passionate story of two families. The characters live in key moments of the history. Varsovia, San Petersburgo, Jerusalem, Paris… are some of the interesting locations where this novel takes place.

En el país de la nube blanca- Author:Sarak Lark

sarah lark

Sarah Lark  is a German author that worked a lot of years as a touristic guide. She got fascinated about New Zealand and its fascinated landscapes. This novel is part of  a new literary phenomenon, which is called “Landscape novels”. “En el país la nube blanca” is the first novel of a saga. In the London of 1852, two girls begin a journey to New Zealand. For them, it means the beginning of a new life as future wives of men who do not know.

You can find these books in different bookstores such as Feria Chilena del Libro and also in some supermarkets like Jumbo.

I need a massage

spa

Probably you all agree that at this time of the year, we are so tired. Full of events, all the year behind.. Batteries are going down.. I don´t not know you, but I definitely need a massage!

Our prefer spot for massages in the city is Spa One& Only. It has two stores, both in Vitacura. As soon as you enter the place, you feel the relax mood. You have different treatments, between 30 and 60 minutes. You can also buy a gift certificates.

After the massage, to continue with the zen mood, you can go to Quinoa Restaurant, one of the best veggie restaurant in the city. I really recommend the mezze dish which has  Falafel, hummus, baba ganoush, tzatziki and salad.
Or maybe, you can go to Metro Cuadrado Cafe, a small place where you can enjoy nice sweet things. Both are located in Luis Pasteur Avenue.

Relax and enjoy!
