Visas and working in Chile

Foreign nationals are required to apply for visas or residence permits. The most common are the following:

  • Provisional work permit for tourist
  • Subject to a contract visa
  • Temporary visas

Provisional work permit for tourist: allow foreign nationals with tourist visa to work in Chile for a period of up to 30 days; this period can be extended up until the expiry of their tourist visa

A Visa Subject to Contract (Visa Sujeta a Contrato de Trabajo) is a resident visa granted to foreign workers who have been hired from overseas and who intend to live and work in Chile. It is valid for a maximum of two years. The dependent visa linked to this type of visa (Visa Residente Sujeto a Contrato Dependiente) is a visa for the immediate family of the contract worker; those on this dependency visa are not allowed to work.

A Temporary Resident Visa (Visa de Residencia Temporaria) in intended for those who wish to travel the country with the intention of settling in Chile, to seek work, or to visit family members. To apply for this visa, you need to fulfill some requirements. This visa is valid for a year. There is also an associated dependent visa for family member of the Temporary Resident Visa; dependents on this visa are not allowed to work in Chile.
